Numeracy

Staff tailor lessons to incorporate student learning styles and general interests to maximise engagement. A hands-on approach works well with our small class sizes and integrated support from teachers and regional coaches. Students are encouraged to take positive risks in challenging concepts while gaining confidence in the basic skills.
A focus on number, measurement and data, problem solving, and structure are at the forefront of each lesson with the learning objectives made clear for each lesson. Students have the flexibility of working individually or in small groups.
As part of the numeracy program at KCHS, students are tested using ON-DEMAND (a computer based, interactive assessment tool) and PAT-Maths (a paper-based diagnostic tool) to measure student achievement and areas for further development.
Numeracy is usually taught in unit blocks which apply a hands-on focus to allow the student a better understanding by making connections from what they learn to life outside of school.
Students in years seven and nine are required to sit the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy) unless the student has filed for an exemption or is diagnosed with an intellectual disability, (in which case they are automatically withdrawn).
