Wellbeing

  • The wellbeing team at KCHS is led by Maddy.

At KCHS, our wellbeing team focuses on improving student engagement, wellbeing and attendance.

Our wellbeing team work with students on re-engaging in their learning and working with the staff to provide the best supports in class.

Each semester we engage and supervise social work university Masters students, – social work and art therapy students and a provisional psychologist.

  • School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a framework that brings together school communities to develop positive, safe and supportive learning cultures.

This assists our school in improving social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for our students.

With the implementation of SWPBS, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:

    • Increased respectful and positive behaviour.

    • increased time focused on instruction.

    • Improved social-emotional wellbeing.

    • Positive and respectful relationships among students and staff.

Kensington Community High School’s values consist of CARES; Community, Achievement,

Respect, Effort and Safety. These values shape our school and the way we function as a community. Educators within the community must be aware of the following practices:

Green Slip Awards – Green slips are placed in all KCHS classrooms. These slips are used as motivational and behavioural incentives and are awarded to students displaying our values in and outside the classroom.

Green slips are placed in a raffle that rewards students with weekly acknowledgments during assembly.

All green slips are collected throughout the year and go into an end-of-year draw with prizes attached.

To understand more about the SWPBS framework, please read our policy here.

  • KCHS welfare staff work in conjunction with young people, external support services and families to develop individualised behaviour support plans which facilitate positive changes in the young person's life. We assume a holistic approach to managing changes in such behaviours and believe that ownership of any change rests with the young person.

We do our best to keep the students in the classroom. We understand that students may experience trouble staying focused in class. The STAR Program (Stop, Think, Act, Review) allows the student to leave the room to speak with the social welfare team to discuss the issue in class. Students then consult with the classroom teacher after completing the STAR behaviour management plan to re-enter the room to continue participating.

You can download a copy of Star Program template to see what is involved in this process.

As educators and a school community, we acknowledge and support the significant role wellbeing plays in supporting and developing learning.
